COIL Connect Executive Board
COIL Connect is an initiative of the COIL Virtual Exchange Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation authorized in the State of New York. Our mission is to support the international growth of COIL Virtual Exchange at the institutional level. General membership in COIL Connect is free and is open to all, however this website is specifically designed to support higher education institutions that have developed or are in the process of developing COIL VE programs, and which appoint a COIL coordinator/administrator to manage their program.
COIL Connect also supports more recent COIL VE practitioners as they seek to develop, integrate, and institutionalize their programs.
CVEF presently has a nine-person Board of Directors based in five countries plus an Operations Manager:
Jon Rubin, President
From 1975 to 2005, Jon Rubin was a practicing media artist. From 2002-11 he implemented his Cross-Cultural Video course in which students collaboratively co-produced videos with peers in other countries. He founded and directed the SUNY COIL Center from 2006-2017. In 2017, he created COIL Consulting and in 2020 COIL Connect, to support higher education institutions which are developing COIL initiatives. In 2022, Stylus Publishers released The Guide to COIL Virtual Exchange, which Rubin co-edited.
Gail Vachon, Treasurer
Gail Vachon is an artist and graphic designer. Since the early days of the web, she provided web design services in a variety of settings. Over the past decade, her focus has been interactive and online training, primarily for corporate clients. She has developed various visuals for the SUNY COIL Center, COIL Consulting, and COIL Connect.
Sarah Guth, Secretary
Sarah Guth is the president of UNICollaboration and teaches English as a foreign language at the University of Padova, Italy. She was the Program Coordinator at the SUNY COIL Center from 2013 to 2014. She currently focuses on the role of professional development in VE and the integration of VE into internationalization-at-home strategies.
Jenifer Cushman, Board Member
President of University of Maine at Augusta since July 2023, Cushman was dean of international education at NAFSA Simon Award-winning Juniata College 2007-2014. Member of the AIEA executive board 2013 to 2016, she was president of AIEA in 2015. Cushman contributed to the 2013 NAFSA publication "Improving and Assessing Global Learning” and the 2016 “Internationalizing the Undergraduate Psychology Curriculum: Practical Lessons Learned At Home and Abroad.” Founder of Penn State’s Experiential Digital Global Engagement (EDGE) program, she has interacted with Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) since 2011.
Osvaldo Succi Junior, Board Member
Osvaldo Succi Junior, Ph.D., coordinates the COIL VE program at Centro Paula Souza’s Higher Education Affairs, facilitating around 120 COIL/Virtual Exchange projects annually with 1,200 Fatec students. His team collaborated with SUNY Ulster, earning recognition from the Santander Bank - Guia do Estudante Award. Beyond his institution, Dr. Succi Junior supports universities in Europe and the Americas in adopting COIL VE. His research focuses on translanguaging, vocational education, international teamwork, and exploring Artificial Language in COIL. Through his work, he aims to enhance educational experiences and foster cross-cultural understanding.
Stephanie Doscher, Board Member
Stephanie Doscher, Ed.D., is Assistant Vice Provost for Curriculum Internationalization at the University of Minnesota. She is contributing editor and co-author of The Guide to COIL Virtual Exchange (Routledge, 2022) and co-author of Making Global Learning Universal: Promoting Inclusion and Success for All Students (Routledge & NAFSA, 2018). She hosted the Making Global Learning Universal Podcast (https://globallearningpodcast.fiu.edu) and serves on the advisory board for AAC&U’s Liberal Education and on the Executive Board of the COIL Virtual Exchange Foundation, Inc. (COIL Connect)
Dan Nolan, Board Member
Dr. Nolan oversees the COIL Initiative at the University of Minnesota system, and teaches as an Assistant Professor of German Studies on the Duluth campus. He was recently recognized as a University of Minnesota Distinguished Global Professor. His research in literary criticism focuses on gestures of truthfulness in the 18th and 19th centuries. He also helped to found the Mobile Language Learning Group, the Environment and Engagement in German Studies group, and the Engaged Digital German Environmental Studies Symposium.
Syd Pereira, Board Member
Sydney Pereira is a professor and the social media marketing program coordinator at Conestoga College in Canada. He blends over 25 years of leadership experience with his passion for education. Renowned for his innovative thinking in business leadership, marketing, and digital strategy, Sydney has received several awards and recognition for his successful global solutions, product launches, and strategic direction.
Marcela Maldonado Clavijo, Board Member
Marcela Maldonado Clavijo, expert in higher education, specialist in University Teaching, master’s in health administration at the University of Rosario-Colombia, and PhD student in Education at the University of Granada-Spain. Her career has focused on the internationalization of curriculum and educational innovation, playing leadership and academic roles in university institutions in Latin America. Through these roles, she has promoted global and intercultural education, using innovative pedagogical strategies supported by ICTs.
Daysi Rueda C.
Operations Manager
Daysi Paola Rueda Cordones worked in International Education for seven years at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. She holds a master's degree in International Relations. Presently, Daysi is a Ph.D. student at the University of Cadiz – Spain. Her research focuses on the internationalization and digitalization of higher education institutions, and spin-offs.
