To advance knowledge, promote civic engagement and develop compassionate leaders through education exchange between the peoples of the UK and the US.
One of 49 Fulbright commissions in the world established by governmental treaty, we are the only organisation to promote and support education exchange between the UK and the US in both directions across the Atlantic and for every generation - from 17 to 70+ years old. We have programmes for high school students, college undergraduates, postgraduate students, university scholars and professionals.
Our two strategic goals are to (1) widen participation in Fulbright programming so that it is accessible and affordable irrespective of background and financial circumstance and (2) support our Fulbright community to come together to address global challenges.
In 2022 we launched our flagship initiative, the Global Challenges Teaching Awards, that bring together pairs of teaching faculty, instructional designers (or equivalent), and administrators from their institutions to co-design and co-teach a COIL focused on a given global challenge. These are the services we provide to the field:
Through the Global Challenges Teaching Awards, faculty grantees and their institutional teams are provided with training and mentoring in VE COIL as well as being supported to build a cohort of VE COIL practice across a year. Grantees also receive:
- Honorarium: $7000/£5510 for each faculty awardee, paid in two instalments.
- Institutional Support Fee: $3000/£2360 for the awardee’s higher education institution, payable upon completion of the professional development programme.
Travel Funding: for the awardee and a member of administrative staff to the US/UK to visit their partner institution, up to a value of $7500/£5900.
Since the GCTA programme began in 2022, we have supported over 10 partnerships in developing COIL courses.
Our VE COIL exchanges bring together instructors and administrators from a pair of universities - one from UK and one from US. This programme is funded by the UK government’s Department for Education.
In this cycle, we focus on understanding and addressing three specific global challenges:
In future, we hope to expand the number of exchanges through philanthropic fundraising.
